Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. Over 90% of diagnosed diabetes cases have type 2 diabetes. It's estimated that there's more than 10 million Americans that have type 2 diabetes and they're unaware that they have it. With type 2 diabetes the body either becomes insulin resistant or it doesn't produce enough insulin to lower glucose levels back to normal levels. Type 2 diabetes is often treated by increasing exercise levels and by using a well planned diabetes diet. Depending on the severity insulin may be required as well. Diabetes sufferers should have a blood glucose monitor "glucometer" and perform regular daily sugar level checks.

Developing Type 2 Diabetes

As with most diseases a family history or genetics can increase the chances of developing diabetes. Other factors that can increase the chances of developing diabetes are

  • Poor diet and insufficient exercise.

  • Being obese or overweight.

  • Having high blood pressure or high cholesterol levels.

  • Being aged 45 years or older.

  • Women who have already had gestational diabetes.

  • Type 2 diabetes is a real health issue and definitely worth investigating further...
